Overview
In his very first children’s book, Ced Funches bursts onto the scene with a bang! Written, designed, and published by the author, A World Without Mothers is a book that is big on heart. Armed with the incredible inspiration of his mother’s battle with cancer and his own realization that he may have taken her for granted, Ced sets out to change the way the world appreciates mothers. Written with a highly entertaining tongue and cheek approach, and illustrated by one of the world’s most talented artist, Halldor Andri Bjarnason, it’s the perfect end-of-the-day book for children of all ages.
Teaching the world to never take mothers for granted has never been this much fun.
The truly amazing part of this beautiful book is that Ced didn’t have to lose his mom to honor her. The book is an amazing tribute to not only his mom, but really, to mothers everywhere. I have never seen anyone do something like this. Awesome!
Mariah Sanchez, Director of Global Branding, and proud mother of 5.

Little did I know the most important dream I fulfilled was penning a children’s book in 2006 dedicated to my mother, ‘A World Without Mothers‘. I had just left the NBA and finally had some time to reflect on my mother and my journey. The book is about what our world would look like if we didn’t have moms around to tell us all the little things. It’s heartfelt, honest, and best of all, a love story.
Over the next four years, I shared my book and my experience with friends, family and colleagues. I talked about how almost losing my mom helped me cherish her more. In the process, something amazing happened. Everyone who I shared my story with had their own story about their mothers. Some had lost their mothers to cancer, death or simply a misunderstanding that has lasted years. I was blown away.
No matter your race, class or creed, we all have one thing in common. Mothers. It was at that point I decided to make something more than a children’s book. I wanted to create a way for everyone to express how much they love their mothers. Some don’t have a voice or a platform to express the true appreciation for everything that mothers do. I believed I could help.
Good To Know
Being a positive influence is very important to this author. “There are simply not enough stories of positive, successful black men. I’m not an actor, musician or athlete. But, I want to show younger audiences that you can still be positive and do something amazing at the same time.”
Funches says his mother instilled a love and respect for people by her outstanding example of honor and integrity. “My mother truly is an amazing woman. She never complained about work, she was always there when I needed her and really showed a tremendous amount of courage to battle and survive cancer.” he says. Creating a worldwide movement and penning a children’s book is the least he could do to repay her.
As a young man, Funches was inspired by local artists to become a graphic designer, leading to his attendance at the Art Institutes International in Minneapolis, MN. After school, Ced started his own skateboard company and worked for six years as the Art Director for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx “Fortunately,” he says, “I have always had a passion for entrepreneurship. Everything that I have experienced has led me to this point of realizing a true dream!” Small town talent with big dreams and an even bigger heart. Not bad for a kid from the Midwest.
